What this Rome catacombs walking tour covers

Everything happens at one site, the Catacombs of Domitilla. There is no coach, no hotel pick-up and no second monument at the end: 2 hours, from €48, skip-the-line entry tickets and an English mother-tongue guide who stays with the group from the garden to the last gallery. The operator's rating is 5.0 (529 reviews).

Domitilla is the largest of the Appia catacombs by length of tunnel: about 17 kilometres of galleries on four underground levels, with around 150,000 burials. It is also the only semi-underground basilica site in Rome, dedicated to the martyrs Nereus and Achilleus and to Saint Petronilla, and the only one of the Appia sites that regularly works in Italian, English, German, Spanish and French.

Underground the temperature sits near 16°C (59°F) all year with high humidity, which is pleasant in July and cold in February. Bring a layer in any month, and wear shoes you can take down stairs and along uneven floors. Domitilla closes every Tuesday, so pick another day of the week when you plan the rest of your itinerary.

Ages are set out by the operator as infant 0 to 4, child 5 to 14 and adult 17 and over. The pace is slow and the talking is constant, which works for older children and teenagers; a toddler who needs to be carried for 90 minutes in a damp corridor will find it long.

The two hours step by step

  1. Catacombe Di Domitilla 20 min
The introduction happens above ground, in the garden, where you meet the English mother-tongue guide. You get the background before you need it: how burial worked in pagan Rome, what the first Christian communities did differently, and which frescoes and symbols to look for in the corridors below.
  2. Catacombe Di Domitilla 10 min
Next comes the only semi-underground basilica in Rome, dedicated to the martyrs Nereus and Achilleus and to Saint Petronilla. It was built while Christianity was still illegal, and the guide works through the signs and symbols the early communities used, and where and how they met.
  3. Catacombe Di Domitilla 90 min
The longest part is the galleries themselves, 17 kilometres of tunnels on four levels with around 150,000 burials. Stops include the fresco of the Last Supper and the image of Peter and Paul, the aquiferium where bodies were washed before burial, the refrigerium used for commemorative meals, the cubiculum of the fossors who dug the tunnels, and tombstones the guide reads out with the names on them.

How this walking tour compares with the other catacomb tours

Take the walking tour if you can get yourself out to the Appia and want the catacomb on its own. The Rome Underground half-day adds the aqueducts, a walking stretch of the Appia and transport in groups of 18 or fewer; the two Piazza Barberini tours pair a catacomb with the Capuchin Crypt and include the transfers; the golf cart tour covers more of the Appian Way in 3 hours.

Length and starting price move together here, so decide by how much of the day you want to give to it and whether you need a lift there and back.
