What the Rome catacombs and capuchin crypt tour covers

This rome catacombs and capuchin crypt tour puts two different kinds of underground Rome into one 3.5-hour block: the bone-lined chapels of the Capuchin Crypts beneath the church of Santa Maria della Concezione, and a guided walk through one of the early Christian catacombs out towards the Appia. Movement between them is by private van from central Rome, so there is no working out bus connections on the way back. The guide works in English.

Which catacomb you see depends on the day. The operator uses the Catacombs of St Callixtus, St Sebastian or Domitilla, and the choice follows each site's own closing days rather than a fixed itinerary. All three are looked after by religious communities, entry is only ever on a guided visit, and the underground stop is the longest part of this tour at 75 minutes.

Two things to check before booking. The Capuchin Crypts stop is not on the Catacombs Only version, so take the version with the timed entry and audio guide if the bone chapels are the reason you are going. Hotel pick-up is not included either, and everyone starts and finishes at the Fontana del Tritone in Piazza Barberini.

Dress for a church and for damp air. Shoulders and knees need to be covered for the Capuchin Crypts, and the catacomb galleries stay cold all year, so carry a layer even in August. Photography and video are not allowed inside San Callisto or San Sebastiano, and the staff there enforce it.

The day stop by stop

  1. Piazza Barberini 15 min
Meet the guide in front of the Fontana del Tritone, ten minutes before the start time. A short introduction and a headcount, then the group walks to the first site.
  2. Museum and Crypt of the Capuchin Friars 45 min
The crypts are a short walk away, under the church of Santa Maria della Concezione. You go down with an audio guide and move through chapels where the bones of generations of friars are set into the walls and ceilings, part of a long monastic tradition. This stop is not included on the Catacombs Only tour.
  3. Appian Way (Via Appia Antica) 25 min
Back up to street level and into a private van for the ride out to the catacombs. The guide points out the Aurelian Walls, the Circus Maximus and the line of the ancient Appian Way from the window, with no walking stretch on this part.
  4. Catacombe di San Callisto 75 min
The underground visit follows narrow galleries past burial niches and frescoed chambers once used for martyrs and popes, with the guide filling in who was buried where and how the early Christian community used the space. This is the longest stop of the day.
  5. Piazza Barberini 25 min
The van drives back into the centre and drops everyone at the original meeting point by the Tritone fountain, within walking distance of food and public transport.

Other catacomb and Capuchin Crypt tours compared

The two after-hours options cost more and swap the standard daytime slot for quieter rooms, which is worth it if you have already seen the main sites by day. The 2-5 hour transfer tour is the cheapest starting price and the most modular, with the Capuchin Crypt as an optional add-on instead of a fixed stop, while the one-hour semi-private option is the shortest and stays on the crypts.
