What the rome catacombs private tour includes

The whole 2.5 hours is private: a car with air conditioning, an English-speaking driver, pick-up and drop-off at your hotel, and the entrance tickets. The price starts from €158 per booking rather than per person, which is why it reads high next to the coach tours and why it works out differently for two people than for four. Reviews stand at 4.4 (128 reviews).

Inside the Catacombs of San Callisto you join a guided group visit led by the site's own staff, about 45 minutes of it. That is how every catacomb in Rome is run, including on private tours: nobody walks the galleries alone. The driver handles the stops above ground, and the stated stop times are 10 minutes at Porta San Sebastiano, 45 at San Callisto, 15 on the Appian Way, 15 at Domine Quo Vadis and 20 at San Paolo fuori le Mura.

Check the day before you pick a slot. San Callisto closes every Wednesday and shuts for lunch, with hours of 09:00-12:00 and 14:00-17:00 and the last morning departure at 12:00, so a late-morning start can leave you waiting outside until 14:00. Underground it sits around 16 C with high humidity all year, there are about 50 irregular steps down and 50 back up with no lift and nowhere to sit, and photography and video are banned in the galleries.

This option leaves out some things other tours bundle in. There is no Capuchin Crypt, no aqueduct park and no bike: for the bone crypt look at the crypts and catacombs tour with transfers, and for the aqueducts the Rome Underground half-day or one of the bike tours.

The 2.5 hours stop by stop

  1. Porta San Sebastiano 10 min
The gate once called Porta Appia is the largest and best preserved in the Aurelian Walls, 3rd century AD, and the point where the Via Appia Antica leaves the city. A short stop, mostly for the scale of the two towers and the line of the walls.
  2. Catacombe di San Callisto 45 min
A guided group visit with the site's staff, about 45 minutes. San Callisto began in the mid-second century, became the official cemetery of the Church of Rome in the 3rd century and runs roughly 19 km of galleries on four levels, with 16 popes and an estimated half a million burials. The standard route takes in the Crypt of the Popes, where Greek inscriptions of Pontianus, Antherus, Fabian, Lucius and Eutychian are still on the walls, and the Crypt of St Cecilia with its copy of Maderno's 1599 statue. Bring a layer, leave bulky bags behind, and keep the phone in your pocket.
  3. Appian Way (Via Appia Antica) 15 min
The road is about 2,300 years old and ran from Porta Capena to Capua and then Brindisi. The first four kilometres show no ancient surface; the long preserved stretch of basolato, still rutted by cart wheels, starts near the Via Ardeatina junction, which is the part worth getting out for.
  4. Chiesa del Domine Quo Vadis 15 min
A small church at Via Appia Antica 51, about 800 metres from Porta San Sebastiano, also known as Santa Maria in Palmis. Tradition places the meeting between Peter, leaving Rome, and Christ here, and a marble slab inside is shown as bearing Christ's footprints.
  5. Basilica Papale Di San Paolo Fuori le Mura 20 min
One of Rome's four major basilicas, built over the burial place of St Paul. Twenty minutes is enough for the nave and the frieze of medallion portraits of the popes that runs above the columns. Shoulders and knees covered, as in any Roman basilica.

How this rome catacombs private tour compares with four other private options

Two golf cart tours cover much the same ground at a lower starting price and move slowly along the basolato, which suits people who want air and photo stops more than air conditioning. The Christian Rome private tour runs 4 hours and adds a papal basilica, and the catacombs tour with private transfer is the most stripped-back of the five: transfer, ticket, guided visit, nothing else.
