What catacombs Rome tickets include on these tours
Each of the five tours here includes the catacomb entrance ticket and the guided visit below ground, held for you on a timed slot by the operator. People searching for catacombs Rome tickets usually want to know where they are sold in the city, and on this page the answer is simple: the ticket comes with the tour, entry and guided visit together, confirmed when you choose your date and departure time.
Nobody walks a catacomb unaccompanied. The visit inside is run by a guide, in English on all five tours, and takes roughly 30 to 45 minutes depending on the site; the rest of the stated duration is transport, the Appia and whatever else the itinerary adds. Group size is capped on some of them, at a maximum of 10 on the express transfer and seven seats per cart on the golf cart tours.
Underground it stays cold and damp all year, around 16 C at San Callisto with high humidity, so carry a layer even in August. The descent is physical: about 50 irregular steps down and 50 back up at San Callisto, about 70 at San Sebastiano, with no lift and nowhere to sit. Photography and video are banned inside San Callisto and San Sebastiano, and staff enforce it.
Which catacomb you see depends on the day, because the tours follow the sites' own calendar. San Callisto closes every Wednesday, Domitilla every Tuesday, San Sebastiano every Monday, and most of the sites shut between 12:00 and 14:00. Take a morning departure if you also want daylight on the Via Appia Antica afterwards.
Which one fits you
With half a day in Rome and nothing to spare, take the express transfer: 1.5 hours from Via Francesco Giambullari out to Domitilla and back, a group of 10 at most, from €55, with your bags left in the office while you are underground.
The lowest starting price on the page is the Ara Coeli transfer tour at €45, and it is also the most elastic: anywhere from 2 to 5 hours, depending on whether you add the Capuchin Crypt with audioguide, the guided underground tour of the Trevi district, or the one-hour panoramic golf cart round.
Families with a child too small to pedal fit the e-bike tour, which carries a baby seat up to 20 kg and hands out a poncho if the sky turns; 4.5 hours from €82, with the minivan covering the stretch out of the centre from Circo Massimo so the riding happens on the Appia and in the aqueducts park.
Anyone who would rather not walk far or ride a bike should look at the 2.5-hour golf cart tour from €98, which puts seven seats and headsets between the Baths of Caracalla, Porta San Sebastiano, Cecilia Metella and the guided visit at San Sebastiano.
A couple or a small group that wants to be collected from its own address books the private golf cart tour, from €143 for 3 hours, with the Domitilla ticket and guided visit plus the Museo delle Mura on any day except Monday.
Before you book
- The transfer tour starts at the Touristation Aracoeli office, Piazza Ara Coeli 16, where you redeem your voucher; a small fountain stands in front, with signs and orange flags outside. Take any bus or tram to Piazza Ara Coeli next to Venice Square; the operator does not recommend the Metro B Colosseo stop.
- The express tour meets at Via Francesco Giambullari 4, in the square in front of the stairs, 5 minutes before the start time, with a staff member holding a yellow label.
- The golf cart tour meets inside the office at Via di Monterone 19, one block off Corso Vittorio Emanuele II and one block from Largo di Argentina; in Google Maps or Apple Maps search for BIGA TOURS, ROME GOLF CART TOURS rather than the street number.
- The e-bike tour meets the nine-seater minivan with the Bike Adventure sign in front of the RUVER Teglia Frazionata pizzeria, and the shuttle brings you back at the end.
- The private golf cart tour collects you door to door from the address you choose in Rome, so there is no meeting point to find.
- Transfer to the Capuchin Crypt and transfer to the Trevi tour are not part of the Ara Coeli package and are arranged by the client.
- Bring a layer for the galleries, around 16 C with high humidity, and shoes that cope with irregular steps; there is no lift and wheelchairs cannot go in.
- Luggage, bulky items, strollers and banners are refused at the catacombs and there is no cloakroom. The express tour is the one that stores bags, in its own office for the duration of the visit.
- Shoulders and knees have to be covered at the Capuchin Crypt, large bags go into lockers there, and the audioguide comes with the ticket if you pick that option.
- Food and drink are not included anywhere here, apart from bottled water on the two golf cart tours and the poncho on the e-bike tour.
- Hotel pick-up is only on the private golf cart tour; the other four start from their meeting point.
- Cancellation terms, current prices and the exact departure times are shown on the booking page for each tour.
