The galleries stay cold and damp whatever the calendar says, so your date is decided by the weather on the Appian Way, by the staggered closing days and by which departure you take. The weather panel on this page refers to surface conditions along the road.

Several metres of tufa sit between the visitor routes and the fields above. San Callisto's own regulations give the result: around 16 °C with high humidity, so they ask for clothing suited to a cold, damp place even in August. Priscilla publishes about 13 °C, the lowest of the main open sites, in February and in July alike.
What does change is everything above the entrance. The Appian Way takes the other three or four hours of the day: the stretch of basolato still rutted by cart wheels, the Maxentius complex, the Mausoleum of Cecilia Metella at the third mile, Casal Rotondo further out. In January you walk that in short daylight, with the state park gates shutting at 16:30; in June they stay open until 19:15. Crowd levels shift with the same curve, and so does how much of the road you can cover by bike before the gates close.
Take a jacket or a long-sleeved layer on every date of the year, including the hottest weeks in Rome. The humidity is the part people underestimate: 16 °C with damp air, after forty minutes of standing still, feels colder than 16 °C on a terrace, and there is nowhere to sit on the route at San Callisto or San Sebastiano.
If you feel the cold, pick an Appia site over Priscilla. The three degrees between roughly 16 °C and roughly 13 °C are noticeable, and Priscilla's tours run about 45 minutes with groups capped at 25 people, so you are down there slightly longer than the 40 minutes at San Callisto. Photography and video are not allowed inside San Callisto or San Sebastiano, so you need nothing in your hands and no bulky bag, which are refused at the door anyway.

April to the end of June and September into October work for everything at once. The Archaeological Park sites run 9:00 to 19:15 from 1 April to 30 September and 9:00 to 18:30 through October, so a 09:00 catacomb departure still leaves a long afternoon for the surface monuments. These are also the months to put the regional park's itineraries to use, more than 16 km of routes it describes as passable at any time of year, on foot or by bike.
July and August are not the problem people expect. The galleries are the coldest place you will stand all day, and the morning is fine for cycling if you start at opening. The gaps are on the calendar: Priscilla breaks from 16 to 23 August 2027, San Pancrazio closes for the whole of August, the Sant'Agnese catacomb office shuts from 10 to 17 August, and the info point in Parco degli Acquedotti is closed in July and August.
November to February gives you the quietest surface and the shortest day. Park sites close at 16:30, last entry 30 minutes earlier and 75 minutes earlier at Villa dei Quintili, so a 14:00 catacomb slot leaves very little afterwards. Cyclists linking the aqueducts to the catacomb strip should note that the San Callisto private road, normally open daily 9:00 to 18:00, is closed for the whole of February, which pushes you onto about 1.5 km of the Appia in traffic or through the Caffarella valley.
In the months when the surface weather is on your side, this 4-5 hour e-bike day from €69, rated 4.8 (1176 reviews), covers the aqueducts and the countryside, with the guided catacombs visit and the lunch or aperitif in the 5-hour version only.

Fix the day before you fix the catacomb, because no two sites rest on the same day. A Wednesday date rules out San Callisto, a Tuesday rules out Domitilla, a Monday rules out San Sebastiano and Priscilla together, a Thursday rules out Santi Marcellino e Pietro, and any day from Friday to Monday rules out San Pancrazio. Sant'Agnese runs its accompanied visits Monday to Saturday with nothing on Sunday, and the state park monuments are closed Mondays as well. Thursday to Saturday clears all of it; the opening hours page on this site sets out each site's calendar if your dates are fixed the other way round.
Sunday is the day the Appian Way itself is at its best. Ordinary traffic is kept off the first stretch past the Maxentius complex every Sunday and public holiday, according to the regional park, so a Sunday date is what gets you the road for walking or cycling. Two things to weigh against that: Priscilla's Sunday morning session only opens at 11:30, and private vehicles are banned from the Via Appia Antica on public holidays, so if you were planning to drive to the gates, choose a different date.
Monday is salvageable. San Callisto and Domitilla both work, so a Monday trip is a Monday catacomb plus the Appia on foot rather than the ticketed park sites. On a Wednesday the answer is San Sebastiano, which also happens to be the only one of the three Appia complexes with no midday break.
| Site | First tour of the day | Last departure | Weekly closing day |
|---|---|---|---|
| San Callisto | 09:00, then every 30 minutes | 12:00 in the morning session, afternoon session to 17:00 | Wednesday |
| San Sebastiano | 09:15, continuous hours | Last admission 16:45, last English tour 16:45 | Monday |
| Domitilla | 09:00 | 20 minutes before each session closes (12:00 and 17:00) | Tuesday |
| Priscilla | 09:30, Sunday 11:30 | 12:00 in the morning, 16:00 in the afternoon | Monday |
| Sant'Agnese | 10:00, hourly 30-minute visits | 12:00, then 15:00 to 17:00 | No Sunday tours |

The first slot of the day is the one to aim for, which means 09:00 at San Callisto and Domitilla and 09:15 at San Sebastiano. San Callisto sends a group out every half hour and the first one is the thinnest, which matters in a gallery where you cannot step aside. It also leaves the afternoon free for the road, and in winter that is the only way the park hours work.
Midday is the hole in the timetable, and from 12:00 to 14:00 most of the Appia strip admits nobody. San Callisto's last morning departure goes at 12:00 and the site reopens at 14:00; Domitilla splits its day the same way; Priscilla runs to 13:00 but starts no new tour after 12:00. San Sebastiano is the one gate that will take you at 13:00, straight through from 09:15 to 17:15. Plan lunch or the basolato into that gap rather than arriving into it.
Late afternoon is the quietest run after the first departure, and the slot with the least margin for error. San Sebastiano stops admitting at 16:45, which is also when its last tour in English begins. Priscilla's final afternoon tour leaves at 16:00, and Domitilla's goes 20 minutes before each session closes. Miss those by ten minutes and there is nothing later on the Appia that day.
The one way to go underground in the evening is the night visit to Sant'Agnese on Via Nomentana, which opens a site that otherwise closes at 17:00 and runs nothing at all on Sundays.
Mid-winter is the one period when the advice to travel off-season backfires, because the two biggest complexes close for maintenance almost simultaneously. Check these dates against your trip before anything else.
Aim for late April to June, or for September and October. Take a Thursday, Friday or Saturday if your dates allow, and book the 09:00 or 09:15 departure. If you want the Appia closed to traffic under your wheels, make it a Sunday and come by bus or bike rather than by car. Keep mid-January to early February off the list, and if San Sebastiano is the site you care about, stay clear of 7 to 27 December 2026.
Not the underground part, which is damp in any weather. Rain changes the hours either side: cyclists have to dismount and push on the Roman paving or use the dirt paths alongside, and the park monuments on the Appia are all open-air. On a wet date, take the Capuchin Crypt instead of the road.
Treat holidays as awkward. San Callisto closes on Easter Day, 28 March 2027, and the Capuchin Crypt and Museum closes on Easter Sunday, 25 December and 1 January. Private vehicles are banned from the Via Appia Antica on public holidays, so a plan built around driving to the gates needs a bus, a bike or a tour with transport instead. Holidays also put the first stretch beyond the Maxentius complex off limits to ordinary traffic.
From 1 November to the end of February the Appia Antica park sites, Cecilia Metella and Villa dei Quintili included, run 9:00 to 16:30 and close on Mondays. Count back 30 minutes from closing for the last entry, and 75 minutes at Villa dei Quintili. A morning catacomb slot is the only one that leaves room for the monuments in winter.
San Sebastiano, the only one of the Appia complexes with continuous hours: Tuesday to Sunday, 09:15 to 17:15, last admission 16:45. San Callisto and Domitilla both shut between 12:00 and 14:00, Priscilla starts no new tour after 12:00, and Sant'Agnese over on Via Nomentana runs nothing between 12:00 and 15:00. Hours are published by the sites themselves and can shift, so confirm them on the day you travel.
Evening option
Sant'Agnese closes at 17:00 and runs no Sunday visits, so the after-hours route is the alternative: 2 hours 45 minutes, from €209, rated 4.9 (133 reviews), with a semi-private group of maximum 6 people guaranteed and a night visit to Santa Maria Maggiore.
